Welcome to The Hillsborough Memorial Website
"Kevin McManus and I were asked by the Lord Mayor of Liverpool Councillor Steve Rotheram,
to put together
an appropriate musical tribute to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster, Kevin McManus
from Merseyside ACME joint projector co-ordinator."
Philip Hayes Director of The Picket Liverpool.
Hillsborough Memorial Project
The project has the full support of Liverpool City Council, Liverpool Football Club,
Hillsborough Family Support Group and the former players association ‘Liverpool
Legends ’. What we have done is produce a recording of 'Fields of Athenry', (Peter St. John)
featuring Liverpool Musicians: John Power, Peter Hooton, Mick Head, Nick Kilroe and Robert Taylor,
former Liverpool FC players, members of the Hillsborough Familes and others.
(The Kop Choir) As I'm sure you know the song in its adapted form ‘Fields of Anfield Road’
has become a real favourite at Anfield !
We've also included other appropriate songs on the CD by Pete Wylie, Elvis Costello and James Walsh
from Starsailor- see cover attached- not for public distribution yet. The Hillsborough Commemorative
website want to put out a record that every Liverpool fan can identify with and which will be see as a
respectful commemoration of the 20th anniversary. Any money is raised will be given to the
Hillsborough Family Support Group.
Background of the Hillsborough Memorial Project
The Lord Mayor of Liverpool Councillor Steve Rotheram approached Philip Hayes of the Picket Music
venue in Liverpool and Kevin McManus of Merseyside ACME and asked them to put together an appropriate
musical tribute to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster on 15th April 2009.
(Steve Rotheram had already approached Liverpool Football Club, Hillsborough Family Support Group and the
former players association ‘Liverpool Legends’ to consult with them and to gain their support for
the idea).
Kevin McManus and Philip Hayes enlisted the services of Peter Hooton of the
Farm to assist with the project, because of his close connections with the fans at the ground.
They decided after seeking the views of fellow fans to get together a version of ‘Fields of Anfield
Road’ The song in its original version ‘Fields of Athenry’, was written by Peter St.
John from Ireland, who kindly donated the song for this CD release.

"Generations before mine used to claim that they could remember exactly where they were when Man first landed on the moon, or on other such significant historical occasions. For us, everybody can instantly recall the precise moment they heard the news from Hillsborough. The memories of the events of the 15th April 1989 are as vivid today as they were 20 years ago and the launch of this CD is simply an attempt to commemorate the men, women and children who didn't return home from that FA Cup semi-final in Sheffield. We will never forget the 96. YWNWA". Councillor Steve Rotheram Lord Mayor of Liverpool, 2009.
